The Most Holy Trinity
My dear parishioners,
God is Good!!! All the time!!! And all the time!!! God is Good!!!
This book is a collection of exquisite sayings bringing readers closer to God. The book begins and ends with a focus on Lady Wisdom, the ideal partner for anyone in search of a meaningful life. This reading belongs to a larger unit (Prv 1–9) highlighting all the blessings this wise woman offers to anyone in search of her.
With obvious satisfaction, wisdom asserts she was present with God “at the first,” witnessing the creation of the vault of heaven, the mountains, and the sea. She remarks in particular on God’s making firm the foundations of the earth and setting a boundary for the waves of the sea. The emphasis here falls on all the ways God secures the world for humanity. Wisdom wants readers to recognize that God cares for and protects the people of this earth. Wisdom is proud to have served as God’s “craftsman” in all of this. All the details in the reading suggest we should think of wisdom as representing God’s protective love for humanity. Understood in this way, it follows logically that wisdom was indeed God’s delight each day of creation.
The days of creation lead up to man and woman, created in the image and likeness of God. Once humanity enters the picture, there is a significant shift in wisdom’s attention. Wisdom was God’s delight as he made heaven and earth. Wisdom found delight in the human family an in “playing on the surface of [God’s] earth.” Wisdom finds great joy in teaching humanity to walk with God.
The doctrine of the Trinity was not fully developed until after the time of the New Testament. Nevertheless, the interrelated aspects of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are found in the New Testament, and nowhere more pronounced than the Gospel of John. The current passage focuses on the Spirit of Truth, also known as the “Advocate “ or the “Paraclete.”
The time remaining for Jesus to be on earth is quickly drawing to a close. There is much more that needs to be said—but no time to adequately say it. The context for this is the crisis that has arisen in the community of disciples since Jesus has told them that he is returning to the Father. How are things to carry on and who will carry them on?
